Hot Water Extraction Carpet Cleaning
Although there is a cleaning process that is steam cleaning, in the context of carpet cleaning, “steam cleaning” is usually a misnomer for the hot water extraction cleaning method. The hot water extraction cleaning procedure employs equipment that sprays heated water (not steam), often with cleaning chemicals, on the carpet while vacuuming the sprayed water along with any dissolved and dislodged dirt at the same time. Professional hot water extraction is recommended by many manufacturers as the most effective carpet cleaning procedure. Actual hot steam could damage man-made carpet fibers or shrink natural fibers such as wool.
The main advantage of the hot water extraction carpet cleaning procedure is that effective cleaning is possible using only hot water, or hot water with dilute cleaning solutions. This avoids the problems associated with chemical residues that can remain in the carpet when using other cleaning methods. Chemical residues on carpet fibers can attract dirt from the shoes, causing the carpet to become dirty again
This method is good for people who are concerned about possible chemical exposure, since the use of detergents and other chemicals is minimized with the hot water extraction carpet cleaning method. It is especially advantageous for children crawling or playing on recently-cleaned carpets. This method also minimizes concerns about breathing volatile exposed chemical compounds that might be used in other cleaning methods.
Moisture left in carpets after hot water extraction carpet cleaning will evaporate more quickly with air conditioning, heating, ventilation or dehumidification.

The more expensive commercial equipment employ a rotating high pressure spray and extraction disc. Truck mounted equipment is suitable for cleaning places where the electrical service is cut off when the premises are vacated by a tenant. Truck mount carpet cleaning is unsuitable for locations distant from a driveway or road. The hoses may need to pass through windows to reach the upper floors of a building. Air conditioned or heated air will also escape from buildings when doors are left open for hoses, creating a waste of energy. Though truck mounted carpet cleaning equipment minimizes noise in the room, they may cause air and noise pollution to neighbors. In these instances, portable carpet cleaning units are preferable.
